“And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you give” Lennon

Monday

I am in an incredibly ace mood. Despite my casual mention to Steven about where me and Kati go – him and Ollie actually turned up – I was quite surprised. It shows that Steven must fancy me – that sounds immodest – but you’re supposed to write anything in a diary! He’s weird looking but he’s really nice – and he’s funy and thinks I’m funny – which is good. He seems a bit shy – in that he doesn’t seem to know if he should touch me or what (he didn’t), but once he gets goinbg – he gets going!!!

It’s different fancying someone and sort of going out with them, cos when you’re fancying them you have all the fun of your fantasies – and what could happen – but on’t – but in going out it’s all for real and you can still have your fantasies, but they’re not as good!!

I’ve got a few people to say casually (I hope) to him – So you’re going out with Jessica now are you? Cos I don’t really know if we are or not – it’s a bit weird. I’m seeing him tomorrow anyway and Helen wants to come down but she’d better bloody not or I’ll kill her – me and Kati will have to give her the slip!!

19th March 1987

Thursday

Well, tomorrow’s the ‘great’ day! I don’t know if Andy’s going – I don’t really want to get off with him any more. I want to get off with someone though, just for the sake of it – so I’ve got someone to ‘dream’ about etc.

Kati doesn’t know what to do about Jim.

We found this ace place for a fag in the university car park by the steps. You can see everything – but people can’t see you, it’s ace.

Helen T isn’t going tomorrow unfortunately (!). It would be funny if she did go, with all her stories about how all the boys are lusting after her and looking down her shirt she has such a vivid imagination.

I am in such a mood. Gran gave us a £5 note each last night and mine has funcking DISAPPEARED. I’ve bloody searched everywhere and it’s BLOODY GONE! A £5 NOTE!

18th March 1987

Wednesday

Kati has decided she doesn’t really want to go out with Jim any more, not that they were before really. She fancies him but dislikes his personality, apparenlty he loves himself to death.

Cow Darby was really patronising today. She was asking why I was a vegetarian and I said I disagree with factory farming and she said – in her really condescending manner – oh, you feel sorry for the animlas, I would have really had a go at her if she had said ‘schon’ on the end. She is such a cow. I’m not going to speak to her from now on, and I’ll just say she dismissed my beliefs in one condescending sentence.

Helen might be going on Friday after all. I bloody hope not. She was bugging me so much today – she really annoys me now. I couldn’t have stood her if she had stayed at mine, I really could not have done.

I got a letter off Jon, which is at school, saying ‘fuck off until you’ve grown up a bit or better still permanently’ – which I thought was rather amusing and was laughing at, but no one else did, but personally I’d rather have a reputation for being unreliable than for going out with Jon M!!!

2nd December 1986

Tuesday
Me and Helen T went to see J this lunch and Williams came and it turns out J’s invited Brennan! Ugh! I hate that bastard and Simon T another wanker. I had a bollocking at him and he just goes only 2. It’s not my party, you bloody spastic. Then he said he wanted a private word but I said me and H are best friends (pinched her arm) and she had to hear. He said I don’t have a chance with him. God knows who he has a chance with. I’d already decided on Dean anyway. J’s going to be really left out the bastard!

27th February 1986

Thursday

I told Heather and Helen T about the others’ little trip to the cinema, and me and Helen broke friends with Jenny and Helen C. They tried to totally blame us, and said that I shouldn’t have told Helen in the first place. They bloody well shouldn’t have tried to keep it so secret! We’re friends now, but I’m not ever going to be as close to Jenny or Helen C cos of this. It’s their own fault, and now I know how Natalie and Kati felt, so I won’t do that again.

Sunday

Yesterday we drove up to London. I was kept awake again by Dad’s bloody radio. The lake at M’s home was totally frozen, and she said some boys had been cycling on it. We went to Guildford in the afternoon, and saw Local Murder – with someone out of No Place Like Home. We drove back to Birmingham this afternoon and I phoned Jenny – I wish I was still as good friends with her as I had been.
