24th October 1986

I’m writing on the train, cos every other time I take my diary down to Reading, I never have time to write in it. There’s a real weirdo and his 2 pals next to me. He’s wearing gorgeous dark denim ‘flares’ and a really nice tight dark blue polo neck. He’s got hair all over his face, and long hair on his head. The chap sitting opposite is all right, except he’s wearing a tank top which looks like a present from his mother. It’s really hot – even though all the windows are open. there are loads of people standing too. Today was another doss about day. We had squash but when we went over to the courts we didn’t see anyone interesting – except for Matthew U. who I hate anyway. He’s a right sod, but he used to be really friendly while I was going out with Jeremy. We played form hockey against L5C at lunch. The score was only 1 – 0 to them which surprised me. I thought we’d get absolutely thrashed but the ball was in our circle all the time, and me and Kati really had to work. Helen T spent most of the match moaning – as usual. I don’t knwo what had happened this time – something about any person from L5C being ‘dead meat’ if they came near her! Silly cow! There’s a German exchnage this year which I will hopefully be able to go on. It sounds really good as they come over during the last two weeks of the Easter term, and for 3 weekdays they go to school, but for the rest, excursions are arranged between them and all the other Germans. We go over 20th August to 7th September, and it’s basically the same thing except the except for less trips and not much school – 2 days I think. It’s in a town called Wiensieb, near Frankfurt, on the Rhine and bordering on the Bundesrepublic so that sounds ace, and it doesn’t cost as much as the French one. I hope I’ll be able to go.

23rd October 1986

Thursday
We won! We were all in a really doss about mood today. Me and Jo went round hitting each other all day and saying ‘sorry’! We had water fights at lunch, and me Kati and Helen were all leaning out of the window and shouting at all the boys who went past, trying to guess their names. Fay was dead sure they’d win and she isn’t speaking to any of our class now! We’re doing it to school and governors on Thursday November 13th. I hope M can come up and watch it. Mrs Young was pleased we’d won and we spent the morning register giving 3 cheers to everyone.

Drama Festival. WE WON!
It went really well today, except Gillian forgot her lines once. Miss Hellier said I was good and believable. All the other Warwicks were a bit boring, specially Jo D., who really gabbled her words. I could tell Phlip was miffed. She obviously thought she had it all sewn up with her poxy scenery! Well ha ha! We were all really happy when we won, cos we’ve never won anything else as a form before!

21st October 1986

Dress rehearsal for Junior Drama Fest. today. The other costumes are good – same as ours. I had to wear suspenders – looked a right prat. Miss Jones said it was very good – but she might have just been saying that! Ours went quite well, except massive chunks were missed out all the time. I doubt whether we’ll win. Fiona says if I am going to write on my card to J then I’ll have to decide whether I want to start it up again. I don’t know. I think I just want to go out with someone. I’ll have to see him, which means I will put the bit on – I think.

Didn’t see Jeremy. We had a physics practical today – it was dead easy! We’ve got our Drama Festival Dress Rehearsal tomorrow. We haven’t got a hope in hell of winning, ours is crap. I’ve got a bad cold/cough at the moment which doesn’t help one bit, and lips sore!

Tomorrow I start my get back Jeremy campaign.

Step 1: Smile (wave), be friendly if I ever see him.

Step 2: Turn up in the dinner queue when I know he’ll be there.

Step 3: Turn up outside a) dinner hall, b) school coincidentally.

Step 4: Send him my letter.

Step 5: Meet him at school – go to Uni Park, explain about me and Emma.

Step 6: Taken from Step 5.

Hopefully he’ll say he wants to go out with me again and we can go somewhere on a no strings attahced, purely friendly basis.

I hope I get to Step 5!

18th October 1986

Sunday

I’ve been thinking about J a lot recently, and I want to see him. As it is his birthday soon, I’m going to send him a card and include a letter:

Dear Jeremy,

I hope you like this card. I’ve sent it to you for three reasons. Firstly, to wish you a happy birthday and many more (as the saying goes!). Secondly, to show there are no bad feelings from m eto you. I don’t know how you feel, but anyway. Thirdly, and this is something I shoudl have done a long time ago, sorry for chucking you. Giving you explanation except for a letter full of bullshit (excuse my language). If you want to hear my explanation and why I couldn’t tell you it, I’d be happy to explain it to you one day, and I feel you may as well know my reasons now,  as I’ve been feeling really guilty for ages. So I’ve taken the opportunity of your birthday to get this ‘off my chest’

Happy Birthday

Jessica
